SURF PHOTOGRAPHY | SIMON MUIRHEAD

"SIMSURF PHOTOGRAPHY"

Shooter:

Simon John Robb Muirhead

Hide out:
Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast

Weapon/s:
The love of my life is my Nikon D200 with Nikon 300mm f4 and x1.4 tele-converter. A Tamron 17-55mm f2.8 for landscape shots.

Years shooting:
2 years

How did you get started:
I got the bug at my day job doing bird surveys and wanting to capture the amazing colours on our unique native species. I have a huge passion for surf, so I ended up bringing the two together and here I am.

Inspirations:
hmmm that’s a tough one for me! I see amazing art work that blows me away every day! I guess I have always tried to go my own way. I should mention pro photographer Fabian Potter who has guided me with equipment choice, is such a perfectionist, and has always provided me with invaluable critique of my work. If I ever get a big head I just need to show him what I think are awesome photos to bring me down to earth again... hahahahaha

Where can we find your work:
I am still struggling to get into magazines, the last time I was published was in Pacific Longboard Rider with a 4 page spread which I must have looked at a thousand times by now. My most regular features are currently on websites coastalwatch and swellnet.

Favourite shot:
Kirra Late Dec 2007 when the big storms started and didn’t stop raining for months!

Simon Muirhead - Shack Therapy

Best surf photo trip so far and why:

Bali ’08 because even though the surf was dismal, when you finally earn a decent salary you can live like a king for peanuts. hahahahaha

If you could go to any location with 4 surfers:
Where? Teahupoo
With who? Oney Anwar, Dru Adler and two of my mates
Why? The first two as they are some of the nicest people I have come across in pro surfing and my two mates so I can watch them get axed! You know who you are!

How can readers get shot:

shoot me an email, sms or call…I usually charge per photo you want to buy, not actual time….works out cheaper and ensures customer satisfaction!

What’s on the horizon for the future of you and your work:
Just keep plugging away with the aim of making a good living out of it all.

Land or water: Land
Surf or bikini's: Surf
Film or digital: Digital
