JAMIE O’BRIEN - INTERVIEW - WHO IS J.O.B.

EXCLUSIVE – Well, much has been speculated about the man, but hearsay aside, who the heck really is Jamie O’Brien? In an effort to find out, mesurf caught up with the frenetic freesurfer at the Australian premiere of his colossal new surf movie, Who is J.O.B. Here’s what the 27-year-old Hawaiian had to say…

So Jamie, how does it feel to be in Australia?
I’m stoked, it’s actually kinda half home for me cause I’m half Australian (Jaime’s parents are originally from Australia). My dad's still gotta a little bit of an Australian accent.

So we’re here tonight for your new movie, Who is J.O.B., it’s been over two years in the making, are you happy with it all?

Yeah I’m stoked. I’m just trying to showcase good waves and bring surfing back into the light of respectable big barrels and just good clean surfing. Everything in this movie is so action-packed. I’ve watched the thing like 15 times and I honestly can’t stop bouncing my leg. It’s a good amp-up film. (Read our full review of the film Who is J.O.B.)

The film goes a lot deeper than people expected. How does it feel to put your life and yourself out there on a plate for everyone?
It’s good. I think most people can understand and maybe relate to it a little bit. I don’t think many people would have know that I went to special ed and this ‘n that. I don’t really care what they think, that’s the whole point of the movie, I’m not trying to hide anything, this is who I am. This is who Jamie O’Brien is.

So what does Jamie O’Brien do when not surfing?

I’m really into fishing; deep-sea fishing, bottom fishing, shore fishing, scuba diving. I love the ocean; I just can’t get out of it. If I’m not surfing, I’m diving. If I’m not diving, I’m fishing. If I’m not fishing ..well .. I’m fishing - it’s too good, I love it.

Twitter, you used to be all over that thing. You’ve gone a bit quiet of late?
It’s actually quite strange – I lost my password and someone hacked my account. I’ve been emailing back-and-forth to Twitter and it’s been the biggest pain in the arse ever. So I’m still trying to get back on Twitter – I don’t know what’s going on there.

How was surfing in the Eddie last year – must have been pretty wild?

Yeah the Eddie was insane. Now that I look back on it, I’m like - I should’ve done a couple of things different and I would have been up on the podium, but yeah that was a great introductory year for me – I really hope I get invited back next year.

Gotta ask, what’s your beef with ASP?
There’s no beef – I respect what those guys are doing. They’re publicising surfing, making it into a rivalry sport, and a really competitive sport. That’s not the direction I want to go right now. I want to go and surf good waves and enjoy it for myself and not have to worry about winning or losing.

But, we’re going to see you in Pipeline Masters in December?
Yeah I’ll be there. I’ll be there with a broken arm or without a broken arm, I don’t care. I’ll surf with, or without it, whatever it takes.
(O’Brien is currently nursing a broken arm suffered at the LA premiere of his new movie – he wouldn’t go into the details of what actually happened, on record).

Growing up at pipeline must be something pretty special?

I wouldn’t swap nothing for pipeline, the connection that I have – it’s priceless. I treasure where I grew up. That’s where I want to live for the rest of my life. That’s where I’ll die.

What’s the future hold, what’s next?
I don’t know, I want to make another surf movie, but ten percent of me wants to go and try and qualify (for the ASP World Tour), so I don’t know, I’m really confused. I don’t know what to do, but to be completely honest, I wouldn't mind going and chasing some good waves for the next few years again. For now, it’s time for me to go home and recover, take care of my arm and just relax and wait for the Pipe Masters.
